Your Thermostat Is Lying to You: Placement Mistakes We See Every Week

A few months back we were in an Oakville home — beautiful place, new high-efficiency furnace we’d installed the previous fall. The homeowner was not happy. “Some rooms are roasting and the furnace keeps turning on and off every ten minutes. Did you sell me the wrong size?”

The furnace was sized perfectly. The problem was about two feet above a heat register in the front hallway: that’s where the thermostat was mounted. Every time the heat kicked on, a plume of warm air washed right over it, it thought the house was up to temperature, and it shut the furnace down. Ten minutes later the house had cooled, it fired up again. Short cycling, uneven rooms, higher gas bills — all from a little plastic box in the wrong spot.

We moved it to an interior wall in the living room. Problem gone. Same furnace, same ductwork. The thermostat is the brain of your whole system, and if the brain is getting bad information, everything it does is wrong.

The worst places we’ve found thermostats

After years in GTA homes, we’ve seen them all:

• Directly above or beside a supply vent. The most common one. The thermostat bathes in conditioned air and thinks the whole house feels like that one spot.
• In direct sunlight. A front hallway with a big afternoon-sun window will read 26 degrees when the house is actually 21. Your A/C runs all afternoon fighting a sunbeam.
• On an exterior wall. Cold radiating through the wall in January tricks it into thinking the house is colder than it is. Furnace runs long, rooms overheat.
• In the kitchen. Ovens, stovetops, kettles — every meal tells your thermostat there’s a heat wave. Then the furnace stays off and the bedrooms go cold.
• In a drafty hallway or near the front door. Every time someone comes in with groceries in February, the thermostat panics.
• Behind a door or inside a cabinet. We’ve genuinely found one inside a built-in bookshelf. It was reading the temperature of old paperbacks.

Where it actually belongs

Interior wall. Central location in the home — a main-floor living area, not a bedroom wing or the basement. About five feet off the floor. Away from vents, windows, doors, direct sun, kitchens, and fireplaces. It should be reading the temperature of the air your family actually lives in.

Two thermostat myths that cost people money

“Crank it to 30 and the house heats up faster.” No. Your furnace has one speed — it’s either on or off. Setting it to 30 doesn’t make it work harder; it just makes it run longer and overshoot past comfortable. Set the temperature you actually want and let it do its job.

Leaving the fan on “ON” instead of “AUTO” for better circulation. In winter this can actually make you feel colder, because the fan keeps blowing room-temperature air between heating cycles. In summer it can re-evaporate moisture off the coil and raise your humidity. AUTO is right for most homes, most of the time.

The takeaway

Before you blame the furnace, the A/C, or the ductwork for comfort problems, look at the little box on the wall. A thermostat in the wrong place will make a perfect system behave like a broken one — and the fix is often a lot cheaper than people fear.
